Prescripitions
The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) guidelines state that a Vet may prescribe a medicine of "category Prescription Only Medicine, Veterinarian, [POM-V]" only after a clinical assessment of the animal.
Repeat prescriptions
If your pet has an on-going condition that may require a repeat prescription, then your pet must be checked periodically by the Vet.
At Aireworth Vets we like to re-assess pets requiring repeat prescriptions every three months, but this may vary with individual circumstances at the discretion of the Vet.
Checks requiring a consultation or a visit will be charged, although we offer a lower consultation fee for repeat medication check-ups.
Requests for repeat prescriptions should ideally be made at least one working day before collection, as some items have to be ordered from our suppliers.
For routine orders (items that we keep in stock) please allow at least 3 hours after placing an order before you come to collect.
A written prescription for the dispensing of medicines elsewhere can be provided on request, a charge is made for this service.

Written prescriptions
At Aireworth Vets we make a charge (approx £13) for providing a written (paper) prescription, the same charge is applied to all clients who request a written prescription.
The charge reflects the time, knowledge and experience that a qualified and responsible Vet requires to produce what is a legal document. The charge also reflects our related business costs.
This service is available at the discretion of the Vet, who will decide:
- Whether a prescription can be provided (usually based on the last time we saw the animal, the previous clinical history and any other information about the condition)
- Whether a written prescription can be repeated
For unchanging long term conditions, it is possible that a single written prescription for one month's supply of medication, may be repeated on a further 2 occasions. This effectively provides a written prescription for 3 months supply.
We would like to emphasise that at Aireworth Vets we always try to put the needs of the animals first. The following key practice policies reflect this:
- We aim to treat all clients fairly, irrespective of the type of animal and whether their needs are routine; short or long term; or an emergency.
- We encourage clients to bring their pets into the surgery or to book visits for their large animals regularly. Animal health can change quickly and early treatment can reduce suffering.
- We are always happy to discuss the cost of treatment and provide estimates, we aim to make our charges clear, fair and reasonable.
