Pre and Post Operation Advice

At Aireworth Vets, we use the safest and most up-to-date anaesthetic agents and equipment, so you can be confident that your pet is in good hands before, during and after the procedure.

  • Before the day of the operation; you will be advised to take your pet's food away from 9pm the night before, so that they have an empty stomach.
  • You may leave water down over night - but take it away after your pet's first drink of the morning.
  • Take your dog for a walk before you bring them to the surgery, giving them plenty of opportunity to relieve themselves!

When you bring your pet into the surgery for their scheduled operation, they will be admitted by a vet, who will carry out a general health check. The Vet will go through the consent form with you and answer any questions that you may have about the procedure and the costs.

When you pet has a general anaesthetic, it is the job of the liver and kidneys to break down the anaesthetic drugs and remove the from the body. Therefore, it is important to check that these organs are working properly before going ahead with the anaesthetic, especially in older animals (over 7 years).

Something to think about is a pre-anaesthetic blood test this can give you extra peace of mind by ensuring that your pet is as safe as possible during their anaesthetic.

At Aireworth Vets, we can carry out a blood test on the morning of the operation. This can detect health problems, such as the early stages of liver and kidney failure. In this case, we can take extra precautions to ensure your pets anaesthetic is a safe as possible, such as placing them on intravenous fluids.

In some cases, we may decide to postpone the operation and place you pet on medication or a special diet until their condition is more stable.

We may give your pet a 'pre-med' injection, which will help them to relax whilst in the kennels.

During the operation, a veterinary nurse will monitor your pets anaesthetic thoroughly, so that any changes can be recognised and dealt with immediately. Our prep room and operating theatres are specially designed and well-equipped.

After the operation, your pet will spend the afternoon recovering in our specially built kennels or cattery, being supervised and cared for by our nursing staff.

You are welcome to call us to check on your pet's progress, early afternoon is usually the best time.

Most animals can go home after 4.30pm on the same day. A nurse will discharge your pet back to you and will go through the after-care instructions with you.

If your pet does have to stay overnight, you can be confident that they will receive on-site nursing care all through the night as our premises are staffed 24/7.

If you have any questions, please just ask - we are happy to help.
