Lameness Investigation

Lameness investigation or ‘work ups’ are the way of accurately diagnosing lameness in horses where the cause of the lameness is not obviously apparent. It can also provide more detailed answers to lamenesses, which don’t respond to treatment.

Horses, like any animal, can be lame for many different reasons and the best treatment will depend on the accurate diagnosis of reason for the lameness.

Lameness Investigation can be very involved and time consuming and even finding out which part of the limb is affected can take some time. Nerve blocks are often used to identify the region or structure the lameness arises from and once this is identified then further investigation using radiography (x-rays) or ultrasound may be used. Sometimes use of MRI or scintigraphy will be used to image pathology.

Almost all detailed lameness investigations are carried out at the surgery where suitable facilities and a range of diagnostic equipment is present.

Techniques of treating lameness have developed and improved over the years and now treatment options range from anti-inflammatory medication through to keyhole or arthroscopic surgery depending on the lesion, expected use, prognosis and affordability.

If you suspect your horse is lame make an appointment with one of our Equine Vets.
